A study on Johannesburg’s water system reveals that more leaked water flows in the Jukskei River than natural river water, signaling major issues with the city’s water infrastructure. Much of the water is from leaks in Johannesburg’s pipes, including wastewater. Johannesburg Water’s loss of clean water is significant, with 46% of water classified as non-revenue water, due to leaks, poor infrastructure, and metering errors. Efforts to reduce losses include replacing faulty air relief valves and installing smart meters. Johannesburg Water has outlined a 2024 Turnaround Strategy to address these issues and improve water management, infrastructure, and data accuracy.
